Abstract: Lignin, which exists as high polymer in plant, is a sort of environment friendly and reproducible natural resource, whose reserves in the world is next to cellulose. However, man has not made the most of it as yet. This article reviews the exploratory development of utilizing lignin in macromolecule field, which mostly includes synthesizing lignin phenol formaldehyde resin adhesives, polyurethane, polymerizing with epoxide as well as graft copolymerizing with vinyl monomer.Although these studies have taken some positive results, there is still the technology gap to carry through upon using lignin as one of raw material in high polymer industry. It has been gradually realized that measures to decrease the polydispersity and increase the reactivity of lignin may be the key to achieve the breakthrough in this field.

Key words: lignin, polymer, graft copolymerization
