Abstract: The method of preparing activated carbon from tobacco stems with zinc chloride by microwave irradiation and conventional processing was studied.According to the experimental data, four stages, namely:preheating, drying, carbonization and activation in conventional processing can be completed in only 9 min by microwave irradiation. The microwave processing time is 1/20 of the conventional processing time, and methylene blue decolorizing ability of the activated carbon comes or exceeds the first grade of powder activated carbon specified in standard(LY 216-79).

Key words: activated carbon, tobacco stems, microwave irradiation
