Abstract: 3-Chloro-2-hydroxypropyl dimethyl dehydroabietyl ammonium chloride (CHPDMDHA) was prepared through quaternization reaction with dehydroabietylamine (DHA) and epichlorodrin as starting material. The stucture and surface activities of product and the content of CHPDMDHA in product were investigated. DHA was transformed into N,N-dimethyl dehydroabietylamine (DMDHA) through Eschweiler-Clarke Reaction. Then, the DMDHA was reacted with hydrochloric to form DMDHA hydrochloride. The CHPDMDHA was obtained after the DMDHA hydrochloride reacted with epichlorodrin. Experimental data indicated that the yield of CHPDMDHA based on purified DHA was ca. 60%. Results of Ion Chromatography (IC) analysis showed that the mass content of CHPDMDHA in product recrystallized by mixture solvent which composed of ethyl acetate and ethanol was 98.32%. The critical micelle concentrations (cmc) of CHPDMDA in aqueous solution at 25℃ was ca. 1.60×10-5 mol/L according to its surface tensions. Its surface tension at cmc (γcmc) was 30.38 mN/m, and the minimum surface tension (γmin) could reach up to 27.4 mN/m.
