Abstract: This review mainly illustrates the preparation of chitin nano-fibers by surface anionization and cationization at C2 and C6 accompanied with the subsequent mechanical treatment.A high density of negative charge was formed on the chitin molecules in alkaline aqueous solution after the C6 hydroxyl groups selectively converted into carboxyl groups by TEMPO-mediated oxidation. The chitin crystals could be further dispersed into whiskers/fibers at nano-level.In another method, deacetylation partially occurred at the C2 position of chitin and it caused the exposed NH2 formed positive charge in the acidic condition. The individual nano-fibers were achieved by simple mechanical dispersion with the driving force of electrostatic repulsion among the crystals.
