Abstract: 1,3-Benzodioxole-5-acetic acid was synthesized from 1,2-benzenediol in a four step procedure.1,2-Benzenediol reacted with dichloromethane to give 1,3-benzodioxole,which was directly chloromethylated to yield 90.1% 5-chloromethyl 1,3-benzodioxole.The chloride was converted easily to 3,4-methlenedioxyphenyl acetonitrile by 80% yield under sodium cyanide nitrilation, followed by alkali hydrolysis to give 1,3-benzodioxole-5-acetic acid.Total yield was 54.2%.Gas chromatography,infrared spectra and elemental analysis were used for characterizations.

Key words: 2-benzenediol, 3-benzodioxole-5-acetic acid
