Abstract: Activated carbon with high adsorption performance was prepared from alkali xylose residue by phosphoric acid activation after pretreatment. The effect of different conditions on the adsorption properties of activated carbon was studied and the pore structure was characterized by N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm. The results showed that the optimum conditions for raw material was pre-activated at 270 ℃ for 60 min and then the activated carbon was prepared at the impregnated ratio 2.0:1(mass ratio), activation temperature 400 ℃, and activation duration 90 min.Under these conditions, activated carbon had the yield of 36.36%, methylene blue value 360 mg/g, iodine value 1 142 mg/g, rate of caramel decolorization 120%, specific surface area 1 850.6 m2/g, total pore volume 1.48 cm3/g, mesopores volume 0.81 cm3/g and average pore diameter 3.2 nm.
