Abstract:

In the production process of PiMade Xuan paper, the sizing agent had a significant impact on the performance of Xuan paper. Based on the traditional drag-dye sizing technology, the bone glue with the mass fractions of 0.5%-2.5% was used as agent for surface sizing of raw Xuan paper, and the effects of sizing agent dosage on the appearance, sizing degree, structure and mechanical properties of Xuan paper were investigated. The experimental results showed that the D65 brightness of the PiMade Xuan paper was negatively correlated with the mass fraction of bone glue. This indicated that the yellowish color of the bone glue and the increasing gradient of the bone glue mass fraction were the dominant factors affecting the optical properties and appearance of the PiMade Xuan paper. The total color difference(ΔE) of the Xuan paper before and after surface sizing increased with the bone glue mass fraction increase, and a slight visible color difference was produced when the mass fraction of bone glue was ≥1.5%. Bone glue sizing could effectively inhibit the water absorption of raw Xuan paper to meet the practical needs of PiMade Xuan paper, and the hydrophobic property of PiMade Xuan paper was greatly enhanced after the mass fraction of bone glue >1.5%. The significant increase in thickness and grammage of PiMade Xuan paper was observed with the increase of bone glue mass fraction, and the decrease of its tightness decreased showed the effectiveness of the sizing, which indicated that the coverage of the bone glue directly led to the changes in the thickness and the grammage of Xuan paper. In addition, various stresses such as the immersion of the paper in the bone glue water, free drying, the water absorption expansion and drying contraction of the bone glue molecules also influenced the three-dimensional structure and size of Xuan paper during the sizing process. When the mass fraction of bone glue was less than 2.0%, the bone glue could fill the fiber pores of Xuan paper, in which the PiMade Xuan paper exhibited higher strength, elasticity and flexibility when the mass fraction of bone glue increased. This effect came from the more effective bonding and higher bond strength brought by the fiber-bone glue system within Xuan paper. Continuing to increase the mass fraction of bone glue, the effective filling of the internal pore structure of Xuan paper had reached saturation, and the improvement effect of sizing on the mechanical properties of Xuan paper weakened. Therefore, the mass fraction of bone glue should not exceed 2.0% in the actual processing of PiMade rice paper, which could achieve effective enhancement and change of the physical properties of Xuan paper.
