Abstract: Oxypolymerization of urushiol in the air with polyphenol oxidase(PPO) as catalyst, acetone or dioxane as dissolvent was studied. The reaction system was determined by UV/VIS.Results showed three absorption peaks at 409, 490 and 653 nm respectively. The intensity of three absorption peaks changed when the reaction was catalyzed by PPO.Absorption peaks at 218 and 228 nm, from conjugates double bond and triene also changed. The reaction of urushiol catalyzed by PPO was similar to that of laccase .Probable mechanism of the reaction was put forward.

Key words: polyphenol oxidase, urushiol, oxypolymerization
