Abstract: Sodium borohydride, sodium bisulfite and their mixture were used to treat the poplar APMP bleached pulps. The treatment conditions for pulps by NaBH4/NaHSO3 mixture were optimised. The results show that poplar APMP pulp treated by sodium borohydride could be brightened and stabilized significantly.Charge of sodium borohydride could be decreased by mixing sodium bisulfite to obtain similar stabilizing effect.Poplar APMP pulps seems to have its specific characteristic of light induced yellowing. IR-FT spectrum suggested that carbonyl and phenolic groups mainly contribute to the light-induced yellowing of poplar APMP.

Key words: poplar APMP, light-induced yellowing, sodium borohydride, sodium bisulfite, brightness stability
