Abstract: Using valonia extract as substrate,14 strains were cultivated and selected.Effects of single strain cultivation and co cultivation of strains on biodegradation of valonia tannin were investigated. It was showed that both bioconversion rate of valonia tannin and yield of ellagic acid would be remarkably increased when co cultivation of strains 1# and 3# was employed. The former is the strain that has faster degradation rate of tannin with weaker tannin resistance;the later is the one that has stronger resistance to tannin with slower degradation rate.Co cultivation at 2℃ for 8 days results in 68% bioconversion rate of valonia tannin and 23% yield of ellagic acid, which provides an effective way to produce ellagic acid from valonia tannin.
