Synthesis and Characterization of (β-methacryloyloxy) Ethyl Ester of Dehydroabietic Acid

Abstract: (β-methacryloyloxy)Ethyl ester of dehydroabietic acid (DA-2-HEMA) with a purity of 99.8 % was synthesized by the reaction of dehydroabietic chloride with hydroxyethyl acrylate and characterized by using FT-IR, GC/MS, 13C NMR , DSC and GPC. The results showed that (β-methacryloyloxy)ethyl ester of dehydroabietic acid, a type of white crystals with melting point 54.23 ℃, can polymerize in the presence of initiator.The molecular weight of the homopolymer is about 20 000-30 000 g/mol and its glass transition temperature is 73.97 ℃.
